How to See Your Tig Welding CLEARLY!
When you are Tig Welding, having clear visibility of your work is crucial for getting good welds, and having fun while doing it. In this blog post, I’m going to show you some IMPORTANT tips and techniques to help you improve your welding visibility and technique. Let's check it out.
Assessing Visibility Issues
Many people encounter visibility problems while practicing or trying out Tig Welding for the first time, which can significantly impact the quality of their work, and cause frustration. Whether it's due to eyesight problems, improper helmet maintenance, or incorrect posture or positioning, addressing visibility issues is key to enhancing your welding performance.
Avoid Cheater Lenses
Yep, I said it. Before you go buying one of these, there’s some tips you should try FIRST. I’ve had many students discover that implementing these tips makes these lenses redundant, so hear me out. One common solution that some welders turn to is using cheater lenses to improve visibility. However, these lenses may not always be the most effective solution. While they aim to magnify the work area, they can also distort depth perception and lead to unclear vision. So in other words, these lenses just magnify some bad habits and poor posture without fixing any problems. It's essential to consider other alternatives before investing in cheater lenses.
Cleaning Your Welding Helmet
A simple yet effective way to improve visibility is by keeping your welding lens clean. Using a product like Lemon Pledge dust spray can help remove dirt and debris from your lenses, providing you with a clearer view of your workpiece. I still stand by this stuff as the best solution to clean your lenses. Regularly cleaning your helmet lenses (yes, all of them,) can make a MASSIVE difference in your visibility while welding.
Adjusting Angles and Posture
Reassessing your welding angles and posture can also play a vital role in getting better vision. By ensuring that you are comfortable and have a clear line of sight throughout the welding process, you can minimize visibility challenges and achieve better weld quality. Experimenting with different angles and posture adjustments can help you find the optimal position for improved visibility.

Choosing the Right Welding Shade
Selecting the appropriate welding shade based on the TYPE of welding you are performing is crucial for maintaining clear visibility. Yes, I change my shade when switching from Aluminum, Stainless, Mild Steel etc. Experimenting with different shades for TIG welding on various materials can help you determine the shade that works best for you. Ensuring that your shade is set correctly can prevent eye strain and improve overall visibility during welding.
Incorporating Glasses for Better Vision
If you wear glasses or require assistance with vision, it's essential to choose the right eyewear that allows you to see clearly while welding. I always recommend to use whatever glasses you would use to read a book. The distance you’ll be from your welding will almost be the exact same as reading a book! If you’re looking at your welding piece without a helmet and can see clearly, this is exactly what you want when you flip your helmet down. There should be no difference. Again implementing these tips with posture, clean lenses, and a proper shade, when you flip your lid down to get buzzing you should be way better off and ready to rock.
Wrapping Up!
Improving visibility while welding is a critical aspect of achieving high-quality welds, and more importantly HAVING FUN when doing them. By following the tips and techniques outlined in this post, you’ll have a much better chance at seeing your work better, and leave you excited and looking forward to your next welding session!
